R22 Phase Out

Is the R22 ban applicable to me?

As of 1st January 2015, EU Regulation 2037/2000 bans the use of ozone depleting HCFC refrigerants and prohibits the recycling of R22. This is a major planning headache for any business that utilises R22 refrigerant in their daily operations. R22 refrigerant is still very common in air conditioning and/or refrigeration systems and timely planning is required for the removal of and replacement of it.

When should I replace?

Older systems, at least a third way through their lifecycle, are more likely to require modification, with this in mind, more companies are looking to ‘phase out’ rather than repair and maintain existing R22 refrigerant systems.

What are my R22 Phase Out options?

To help navigate through this information minefield we have surmised the main R22 Phase Out options: -

Option 1 – Replace whole system

  • Long-term strategy
  • Greater energy efficiency
  • Reliability and extended lifecycle
  • Meet future cooling requirements

Option 2 – Modify system to use new refrigerants

  • Short-term strategy
  • Quick to implement
  • Not applicable to all system designs
  • Efficiency, reliability & cooling capacity may be reduced

What do I need to consider?

Efficiency - Increased energy efficiency equates to reduce energy consumption, together with lower energy costs and CO2 emissions. Generally, if a system is 10 years or older it can be replaced with a more energy efficient system, the customer can expect at least 30% increase in energy efficiency. Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) is an integral part of the Governments’ pledge towards climate control and energy savings, providing the new system meets specified energy saving criteria, this will be offered through enhanced tax relief.
